Skiing Injuries & Physical Therapy: From Black Diamond to the Bunny Slope

February 17, 2017

If you have been out on the slopes this winter then the chances are you may have done some damage to your body. Of course none of us likes to admit that the mountain has conquered us, but more often than not there are several common, lingering issues which can plague skiers and make your terrestrial life very uncomfortable.

Knee: If you have been on the slopes then the chances are you have done damage to your knees. Whether it’s something like a severe strain to your anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or even if it’s something as simple as an improper bend when you’re taking off your skis, the knees and ankles are where you are going to take a lot of abuse.

Shoulders: Another common injury for a skier is the shoulder. Have you tumbled and in an effort to break your fall, have you put out your arms? This may have given you some type of shoulder, elbow, hand, or wrist. This type of injury is also known as a FOOSH injury. FOOSH is an acronym for “fall on an outstretched hand.”

Fractures: One more potential injury you could be suffering from is a fracture. The shoulder and lower leg are common areas where sprains and fractures may come about. You could get a torsion fracture from pulling out of your ski wrong. Your shoulder could be dislocated or you could tear a rotator cuff.

Even if your injury seems like not that big of a deal, any of these or scores of others, left untreated, can cause far worse damage down the road. Do yourself a favor and make sure to care for your body this wintertime on the slopes. If you have had a skiing incident and you want to get checked out, a physical therapist is a great idea. One of the very best physical therapists which skiers have been coming to for years is Miccass Physical Therapy. Located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Miccass Physical Therapy can help skiers of all levels and all skill sets recover from injuries sustained on the slopes.
