Knee & Hip Pain Treatment in New York

The hip and knee are rarely independent problems. Pain in one almost always involves the other, and both are driven by what happens above and below in the kinetic chain.

The chain runs from your foot to your spine.

Knee and hip pain are the most common lower extremity complaints in physical therapy, and the most commonly mistreated. Addressing only the painful joint without examining what drives it from the foot below and the lumbar spine above misses the most important part of the picture.

Weak hip abductors load the IT band. Stiff ankles force the knee inward. Tight hip flexors change the position of the pelvis and stress the lumbar disc. We assess the system, not just the symptom.

Where your pain occurs tells us what is involved.

Knee and hip pain have characteristic patterns that point to specific structures, each with its own treatment strategy.

Knee Pain on Stairs

Pain at the front of the knee going down stairs or after prolonged sitting, classic for patellofemoral syndrome.

Lateral Knee Pain

Pain on the outside of the knee with running or prolonged walking, typically IT band syndrome or lateral compartment issues.

Morning Hip Stiffness

Hip joint stiffness first thing in the morning that loosens after 15-30 minutes of movement.

Groin Ache

Deep aching in the groin with hip rotation or end-range flexion, often labral or arthritic in nature.

Giving Way

A sensation of the knee suddenly giving way, associated with ligament laxity, meniscal involvement, or quad inhibition.

Pain with Squatting

Pain with deep knee bend, getting in and out of a car, or rising from a low chair or toilet seat.

Load the chain correctly, eliminate the pain.

Lower extremity rehabilitation at Miccass Physical Therapy includes a gait and movement analysis to identify where the kinetic chain is breaking down. We identify the contributing impairments: hip weakness, ankle stiffness, altered mechanics, and address them systematically.

Manual therapy restores joint mobility in the hip, knee, or ankle as needed. Progressive loading builds the strength and control required for the demands of your daily life and activity goals.

No referral needed. Most insurances accepted. In most cases, you can be seen within the same week.

From pain with walking to pain-free performance.

Reduce Pain and Restore Joint Mobility

Manual therapy and pain science education reduce acute symptoms while restoring the joint range needed for normal movement.

Address the Contributing Chain

Hip strengthening, ankle mobility work, and movement pattern correction address the upstream and downstream drivers of knee and hip pain.

Progressive Loading and Return to Activity

Gradual progression back to stairs, running, sport, or any other activity goal, with objective testing to confirm readiness.

What our patients say.

“Outstanding physical therapy in a clean and spacious environment. I have had therapy there for a total shoulder replacement and arthritic knee. Jenny is the owner and an outstanding therapist. A major plus here is that you are never alone as you go through your exercises.”
