Post-Surgical Rehab in New York

Surgery corrects the structure. Physical therapy determines what you can do with it. The quality of your outcome depends as much on your rehab as on the procedure itself.

The surgery is the beginning, not the end.

Post-surgical physical therapy is not passive recovery. It is an active, progressive process that begins in the first days after surgery and continues until you have fully regained, or exceeded, your pre-surgical function. How aggressively and intelligently this is managed determines your long-term result.

At Miccass Physical Therapy, we stay in close communication with your surgical team and follow their post-operative protocols exactly, while bringing the expertise in movement, manual therapy, and progressive loading that turns a good surgery into an excellent outcome.

Post-surgical challenges are predictable and manageable.

Every surgical recovery involves common obstacles. The goal of PT is to address each one systematically and prevent them from becoming permanent limitations.

Range of Motion Loss

Scar tissue formation and protective muscle guarding limit joint mobility in the weeks following surgery.

Muscle Atrophy

Rapid muscle loss begins within days of surgery due to pain inhibition and disuse. PT arrests and reverses this.

Post-Surgical Pain

Normal post-operative pain that PT helps manage through movement, tissue mobilization, and modalities.

Scar Tissue Adhesion

Internal and external scar tissue that limits movement and contributes to stiffness if not actively mobilized.

Movement Fear

Protective avoidance of movement after surgery: natural, but addressed through graded exposure and education.

Neuromuscular Inhibition

The nervous system suppresses muscle activation around the surgical site. Targeted PT restores normal recruitment.

Protocol-driven, outcome-focused, and always progressing.

Post-operative rehabilitation at Miccass Physical Therapy is built around your surgeon's protocol, individualized to your response, and progressed based on objective criteria, not guesswork. We track your range of motion, strength, and function at every session.

Our manual therapy skills differentiate what we do from basic post-op exercise. We actively mobilize joints and soft tissue throughout the recovery timeline rather than waiting for them to recover on their own, significantly accelerating your return to function.

We coordinate directly with your surgeon and can begin treatment as early as 2-3 days post-operatively in many cases.

Phase by phase. Milestone by milestone.

Early Phase: Protect and Activate

Manage swelling, protect the repair, and begin early activation of the surrounding musculature. Passive and active-assisted range of motion begins immediately to prevent contracture.

Intermediate Phase: Restore and Strengthen

Restore full range of motion, eliminate scar tissue restrictions, and begin progressive resistance training to rebuild the muscle mass and strength lost during early recovery.

Return Phase: Function and Performance

Activity-specific training, movement quality testing, and objective strength benchmarks confirm full readiness. Discharge includes an independent maintenance program.

What our patients say.

“I can't say enough great things about Jenny and the rest of the team at Miccass. I went to Jenny for the first time four years ago to rehab my first knee replacement. It was a very difficult recovery and I couldn't have done it without her.”
